I used to play pinball in college with my friend Brendan Carroll when we were students together at the University of Massachusetts. Brendan used to beat me all the time. I just wasn’t a good pinball player and that was that. Well I’ve been working on my pinball skills using a game called Wild West Pinball. I don’t know if I’ll ever get a rematch with Brendan but if I do, I might just be able to beat him next time.

Wild West Pinball, by OOO Gameprom, is a fast 3D pinball game that provides realistic table tilting and flipper controls. To use the controls just touch anywhere on the sides of your screen. To tilt the table a bit, just tilt your iPhone. The controls are extremely responsive and the ball has excellent, realistic physics behind its movements. To release the ball just touch the screen, pull the ball release back and let it rip!

One of the neat things about Wild West Pinball is that the camera follows the ball around the screen. It’s a departure from some other pinball games that show the entire screen and that can make the ball harder to see plus it’s basically 2D graphics. Wild West Pinball takes it to another level and shows the advantage of having the camera move around though it might take a minute or two to get used to it.

The game promises 40 frames per second and it didn’t seem to disappoint even on my iPhone 3G (as opposed to the faster iPhone 3G S). I didn’t detect any slowdown or graphic problems while playing Wild West Pinball. The sound is also good and adds to the experience but I wouldn’t have minded having some kind of wild west folk guitar or other song offered as background music. It would have added even more flavor. Maybe the theme from “Rawhide” or something similar?
