#4 Google Mobile With Voice Search
As I pointed out earlier in this article, sometimes it’s easier to speak than to type. And Google Mobile with Voice Search lets you quickly and easily use your voice to search the Internet on your iPhone 3G. Yep, now you don’t even need to type a single word to find the information you want on your iPhone.
After you start Google Mobile you can immediately start using the voice search feature. Just click the Voice Search button or hold your iPhone up to your head as if you were making a phone call. And don’t worry about calibrating the software, you won’t need to. It seems to just work right from the start.
Voice search aside, Google Mobile also adds a lot of value by giving you easy access to such Google services as Gmail, Docs, Calendar, Reader, etc. You can customize the start screen, turn screen rotation on or off, change searchable items and a lot more. The iPhone 3G comes with its own little weather app that works well enough for what it does. But, frankly, it’s just not enough sometimes. The Weather Channel is a free app that picks up where Apple’s tiny weather app leaves off and gives you much more information about the weather in your area.
When you start the app it will try to find your current location via location services. You can see the temperature, humidity, visibility, wind, etc for your local area. You can also click the Explore Map tab to see a weather map with customizable layers of weather in your area. You can choose from a number of different map layers including the following:
Radar, Temperature, Clouds, UV Index, 24-Hour Rainfall, 24-Hour Snowfall
The Weather Channel includes video forecasts for major metropolitan areas, severe weather information and more. For more information be sure to read my full review of the Weather Channel.
