One of the nicest things about the iPhone 3G is its video capabilities. Movie buffs can download movies from iTunes and watch them on their iPhone 3G. But how do you find out what’s hot and what’s not in terms of theatrical movie releases? What about DVD releases?

Movies is a free application courtesy of Flixster that features listings of top box office movies as well as upcoming releases. It also features a database of more than 50,000 DVD releases and links to movie trailers you can view on your iPhone 3G. You can find show times for local theaters and also links to sites like Rotten Tomatoes and the IMDB for more information about a particular movie.

One thing that’s quite nice about Movies is that if you let it it will use your current location via the iPhone 3G’s location services feature. You can easily find movie theaters in your area, show times, theater phone numbers and other helpful information. If you choose Theaters Near Me you’ll find a list of theaters with the closest theater at the top of the list. This is an excellent way to find a convenient establishment local to you.

The Upcoming tab lets you easily find flicks that haven’t been released yet. You can see the release dates, Flixster ratings and cast information. If you click the Settings tab you can opt to see show times for the upcoming week or just for today.

Movies is pretty much a must-have if you are a movie junkie. The app is simple to use and it weighs in at a very petite .3 MB so it’s not going to take up much space at all on your iPhone 3G. But it will prove very, very handy for those times when you’re out and about and you suddenly decide you want to see a movie but aren’t sure where to go.

The Good: A free and easy to way to find local theaters and show times as well as lists of the top box office movies and info about DVD releases.
The Bad: It would be nice to see ratings from the IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Right now the only ratings seem to be from Flixster though the app does link off to the IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.
Overall: Excellent app that is worth downloading and keeping on your iPhone 3G.
